Manual or Automatic?

There are many good reasons to drive an automatic. Do you recognise any of the following statements?

  • I want to find the quickest way to learn to drive.
  • I struggle to change gear and panic at junctions or in busy traffic.
  • I’m fed up with stalling.
  • Hill starts worry me.
  • I wish I’d learned to drive a long time ago, am I too old now?
  • I need to get a UK driving licence but only drive an automatic in my own country.

Driving and learning in an automatic is much easier than driving a car with manual gears because the car senses when to change gear and shifts automatically into the correct gear. This means that there is no clutch pedal to worry about. Automatics are becoming more and more common these days especially due to the increase in popularity of Hybrid and Electric cars, which are all automatic. It also means:

  • Better concentration and safety as you don’t need to worry about being in the correct gear. This means you have more time to watch out for other road users.
  • No more worrying about clutch control or multiple gear changes in busy traffic, hilly terrain or while manoeuvring.
  • No more embarrassing stalling as you can’t stall an automatic car.
  • Often you will need to take less lessons compared to a manual car.
  • It could cost less to learn to drive.
